Why professional dance classes?
Dancers are the only performing artists who need to take daily classes to stay on top of their game, even when they reach the peak of their careers. Daily class keeps their bodies in top condition and their minds focused and alert. It also keeps them up to date with emerging trends in dancing and dance teaching. Taking a regular dance class helps dancers avoid injuries, and helps them to gently return to the rigours of rehearsal and perf
ormance after injuries or taking time off.
What is a drop-in class?
A drop-in class means that dancers do not need to attend the class religiously in order to keep up. Changing schedules due to rehearsals, performances, touring and short-term contracts mean that it may be difficult for dancers to come to class all the time. Our classes allow dancers to come when they can, knowing that they can expect a thorough workout for their bodies and mind at any one of our classes. Dancers visiting from outside KL are also welcome to join our class during their time here.
Who takes the professional dance classes?
These classes are designed for dance practitioners who are already familiar with contemporary dance – it is not a beginner's class. Most 'full-time' dance practitioners in Malaysia support themselves as dance teaches or commercial dancers, with teaching, rehearsals and performances in the evening and on weekends. Therefore a morning class during the week is better able to cater to their availability.

Who teaches the class?
Class is taught by a rotating group of dancers from the Klang Valley, as well as visiting dancers and choreographers. Teachers are chosen based on availability and interest, suggestions of dancers who take the class, and the teacher's capacity to challenge dancers with advanced abilities.
Having different teachers allows class-takers to challenge themselves and their habits with each class. It provides a variety of technical approaches and styles, to keep class-takers interested. It takes advantage of the short-term expertise of visiting dancers. Most importantly, it allows teachers themselves to take the class as students instead of teaching all the time.

How much does class cost?
Drop-in classes cost RM30 each for a 90-minute class, paid to the MyDance representative who is attending the class.
Alternatively, you can buy a class card for RM 200 which entitles you to entrance to 10 classes. That's only RM20 per class, a saving of over 30%!
Please be aware that the class card expires after four months from the date of issue, and it cannot be transferred between dancers.
Where does the money go?
Dance teachers are paid about RM 80 per class. Thanks to the support of MAP, the remainder goes to the Dance Class Fund, to provide top-ups for paying the dance teachers when not enough students come to class. Every six months, if the Dance Class Fund is over RM300, the excess goes into the savings account of MyDance Alliance to fund other projects supporting and promoting dance in Malaysia.
What happens during class?
Contemporary classes here are similar to contemporary technique classes elsewhere in the world. Class starts with a warm-up, often on the floor, before continuing with stationary exercises, and across-the-floor exercises involving turns and jumps. It may involve learning an extended phrase that may build up over several classes. It may also involve strengthening exercises for the core and upper body. Class will usually end with cooling down, but dancers are encouraged to come early to warm up and to cool down carefully afterwards.
Please check MyDance Alliance Page on Facebook http://www.facebook.com/mydancealliance for updates on class schedule and instructors.
