October is shaping up to be another month full of dances and dancing. As the dance community in Malaysia continues to grow, we regret to announce that MyDance Alliance is no longer operating its studio in Petaling Jaya, due to financial pressure. The studio, which started life as Rivergrass Dance Theatre, was generously donated by Mew Chang Tsing for the use of MyDance Alliance. It has nurtured numerous dance productions, and served as a valuable venue for the regular practice of dance as well as for occasional special events. It also functioned as the headquarters for several MyDance Festivals, bearing witness to the hard work and creativity that made those events successful, and it was the cheapest studio in town for choreographers looking for accessible rehearsal space. We would like to thank Madame Mew for her dedication in managing the MyDance Community Studio for many years, and for seeing its potential for MyDance Alliance. And we encourage you to go out and support your local dance institutions! Bilqis Hijjas, President
JAMU 2010 is an annual choreography performance event that aims to develop and provide further exposure to lecturer-choreographers of ASWARA. For 2010, the National Academy of Arts Culture and Heritage (ASWARA) will present JAMU 2010 – Dance Out! - focusing on site-specific work. The concept of site-specific dance evolved in the 1950s with the advent of post-modernism. This is inspired by various factors including breaking the boundaries between the performers and the audience, issues of cost to reduce production expenses and the desire to build new vocabulary. JAMU 2010 will take Dance Out of its conventional spaces. Through these efforts, ASWARA is committed to the exploration of contemporary dance, and providing the fertile soil that cultivates life-long learning. The art and craft of choreography has infinite possibilities – and we encourage the audience to develop their sense of appreciation for this genre of dance which does not always have the mass market appeal.JAMU…a feast for the senses…. Singapore's most exciting dance festival is happening again between 8 and 17 October. For information and ticketing see http://www.dansfestival.com/2010/
This year, da:ns is proud to present dancemakers who have the exceptional ability to use the power of the physical body to find what resides deep in our souls, often taking us to undiscovered places in our hearts and minds. From across generations, these artists have created works of art that speak directly to us on what it means to be human. In 1982, Mats Ek took the revered Romantic ballet Giselle and retold it for a contemporary world. In a radical and audacious move, Ek changed both the form and text, and brought in complex psychological themes and ideas. More recently, Hofesh Shechter has taken the UK by storm with his inventive works that exude both rugged energy and poignancy. They show a thrilling, chaotic, fragmented world, and often contemplate issues such as individual freedom and conflict.Meanwhile, flamenco star Eva Yerbabuena and Singapore’s own daniel k dig deep within themselves in search of the meaning of love. In Lluvía, a tribute to love’s purity and solitude and the endlessness of life, Yerbabuena bares her soul in a tour-de-force performance. In Hokkaido (Or Somewhere Like That), daniel k takes us on a hypnotic journey of recollection, exploring the elusiveness of memory and the lightness of love.Ballet is often a quest for the metaphysical notion of Beauty, and ballet choreographers and dancers constantly push their limits to express one of the highest ideals in humankind. The International Ballet Gala features scintillating performances by a line-up that includes the celebrated prima ballerina Julie Kent and the charismatic Daniil Simkin from the American Ballet Theater.
Asian philosophies inspired Edwaard Liang and Xing Liang for their works presented in a double bill. Liang enters an otherworldly realm between heaven and earth with the Buddhist concept of ‘bardo’, whileXing navigates the freedom and openness of creativity, drawing from the Tao Te Ching. In another powerful double bill, South African Gregory Maqoma enacts the drama and power play in human relationships while Belgian Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui explores the intricacies of boundedness – to desires, to each other, to history.Dance is also a social activity for participation and an integral part of life for many communities. da:ns invites you to express yourself and experience the joys of dance in Footwork dance workshops, What’s Your Move mass dance sessions and Rasas – Traditional Dances from Asia.
