The 'grand old man' of Japanese butoh dance theatre, master Kazuo Ohno, died earlier this month at the age of 103. Ohno was greatly involved in the early development of the butoh dance style in Japan after World War II. He was acclaimed for his solo performances in which he depicted tottering old women, fraught with evocations of darkness and decay. Ohno spent some years teaching dance in his youth, but in 1938 he was drafted into the Japanese Army, with whom he served nine years, one of them as a prisoner of war in New Guinea. His later works reflect this experience, as well as the wartime atomic bombings of Japan. His last performance on stage was in 2007. In his final years he used the remaining working parts of his body, ravaged by illness and age, to continue to dance. The Kazuo Ohno Dance Studio in Yokohama, now directed by Ohno's son Yoshito, continues to conduct workshops, produce performers and disseminate Ohno's butoh philosophy. See http://www.nytimes.com/2010/06/02/arts/dance/02ohno.html for Ohno's obituary in the New York Times.

The Krishen Jit ASTRO Fund has been created by ASTRO to encourage and support creative work in Malaysia. One of the main objectives of Krishen’s pioneering work was celebrating original Malaysian creativity in as varied and alternative ways as possible in all the areas of the arts. His groundbreaking theatre practice straddled and brought together a wide range of contrasting spheres, producing projects that were inter-disciplinary, multi-cultural, multi-lingual and experimental. Negotiating between academia and practice, tradition and contemporary pop culture, Hollywood and Bollywood, the mainstream and the marginalized, Krishen’s work articulated a Malaysian identity that was ever evolving and encouraged practitioners and audiences to reflect on their lives and societies. This is the spirit of the Krishen Jit ASTRO Fund. Once again, in 2010, the fund will give out grants ranging from RM5,000 to RM20,000 for :

In the last four years 'no ballet' has established itself as a renowned player on the international dance scene – the proof: almost 1000 applications from more than 50 nations. The selected 100-plus dancers and choreographers enchanted the audience, the jury and the media with their passion, hard work and enthusiasm. The result was three exciting days in the Theater im Pfalzbau in Ludwigshafen, Germany – modern dance of the highest level! The conceptual motto no ballet of the competition as well as the artistic credo “reduce to the max” should encourage – if not to say force – the choreographers to concentrate on the essentials of a (post)modern dance-production: Choreographers should develop their own contemporary and genuine dance language, their own style, beyond established dance techniques and movements, and without the help of splendid stage-design, costumes and light-effects. Pure Dance. The jury will select circa 20 choreographers from all the international applications. They will choose groups who can surprise and please the audience with daring, intelligent and humorous productions. The choreographies, divided in two groups, have to be presented on Thursday the 7th and Friday the 8th of October 2010 in front of the jury and audience in the Theater im Pfalzbau Ludwigshafen in Germany. The finale, consisting of the best 4 productions from each day, and the announcement of the winning choreographers, will be on Saturday the 9th of October 2010 at 7.30 pm. Prizes to a total value of Euro 16,000 will be awarded. For more information about 'no ballet' and application forms, see http://www.no-ballet.com/ CLOSING DATE FOR APPLICATIONS IS 18 JULY 2010
