Acclaimed for this 'prodigious technique' (Dance Magazine), Patrick Suzeau presents a multifaceted programme that contains classical and contemporary styles and ideas from east and west to create poetic works that range from the divine to the ridiculous. Come and enjoy this 'physically expressive, strong dancer' (The New York Times) in a programme of lyricism, drama and comedy.
Also featuring dancers of the Temple of Fine Arts.
- Items:
Invocation: Suits of 4 Pieces -- a synthesis of east and west. 1. Ganesha Stotram -- Starting with the pushpanjali, this dance creates a counterpoint with the verses by giving form to the One beyond form, Lord Ganesha. 2. Piyage - this dance alternates between ecstatic dancing based on classical modern dance and verses in which Mirabai praises Lord Krishna. 3. Lakshmi - elements of Odissi and classical modern dance are fused stylistically in this dance praising the goddess Lakshmi. 4. Bhumi mangalam / Guru stotram - this dance evolves from Indian classical dance steps to contemporary spatial expression of the thematic material. Patrick Suzeau, music by Ras Mandala.
- Last Flights -- A world premiere choreographed by Suzeau for The Temple of Fine Arts, this work concerns itself with the environment using the image of birds in an urban landscape.
- Caligula -- Created in 1972 during the Nixon administration, Cohan was fascinated by Caligula's remarkable cruelty combined with delusion and self pity. Choreography: Murial Cohan.
- Winsome Wench and Handsome Hero Vanquish Vile Villain -- Combining the virtues of mime and dance this work is a witty take-off on the silent film era, in which Suzeau plays the three characters. Choreography: Meli Kaye, music by Franz von Suppe.
- Celestial Players -- This joyous work fuses elements of bharatanatyam and contemporary dance to describe apsaras, featuring Dhanya Thurairajah and Hema Sivanesan. Choreography: Patrick Suzeau.
- Baltic Sketch -- Following a harsh winter as a Fulbright Scholar in Lithuania, Suzeau created this work to reflect his experience about the eternal cycle of latency, growth and renewal.

The book will be launched on 23 September during the Asia-Pacific International Dance Conference at the Royale Bintang Hotel, Kuala Lumpur.

Notations from New York
MyDance member Stephanie Lim is spending a year in New York at the Martha Graham School of Contemporary Dance. These are her regular updates.
This time ten days ago I was shivering in my basement room, listening to the roar of Hurricane Irene. For the first time in its history, all the subway, bus and commuter railway services in New York were completely shut down due to the natural disaster. Low-lying Zone A were evacuated. Luckily I was in Zone B, but even so I took all my belongings off the floor, just in case of flood! In the end, I survived Hurricane Irene without much trouble, although the final showings of the Horton Performance Workshop at Alvin Ailey had to be rescheduled, along with all the other events happening in New York that weekend.
Hurricane Ginger is a different story. Ginger Cox is my favorite jazz instructor at Broadway Dance Centre, and I take her intermediate and leaps-and-turns classes. She is supportive, but tough. She has been challenging me to be more confident and extroverted in class, which is really difficult for me! I feel like I have been working hard, but now I need to start working smart as well -- really pinpointing the things I need to work on, and focusing my energy. Dancing in class next to members of Ginger's Link Dance Company is always inspiring.
I have been taking a few Graham classes at Peridance taught by Jennifer Conley, who also teaches at the Graham School. I love Jennifer's classes. Even though she is 8 months pregnant, she has great energy and keeps the whole class on the move the entire way through. After the first exercise, I'm already dripping with sweat.
Classes at the Martha Graham School start tomorrow. I'm looking forward to getting back into intensive Graham technique!
