Devised Theater Workshop by Joao Evangelista

Five Arts Centre is pleased to be presenting a workshop by Joao Evangelista, a contemporary performer from Portugal.

The workshop aims at creating a space, supported by collaborative tools, to research and question how can a performance recreate the communal and the social. Can theater present politics? Can it actually go beyond representation, and back, into an ethical spectacle? How does a communal space (re)create itself?  What is the architecture of a reality that performs the social, and how is it sustained?

Dates:   Monday 24 January - Friday 28 January 2011
Time:    7-11pm
Place:   Five Arts Centre studio, 27 Lorong Datuk Sulaiman 7, Taman Tun Dr Ismail, KL
Cost:    Only RM100 per person....extra special low 2011 rate!!

This is a first come first serve basis as we are looking for only 12 participants.

If you are interested in participating, please email Marion at mariondcruz@yahoo.com

UPCOMING PERFORMANCES

Don Quixote & International Ballet Gala

Don Q Poster

Subsequent to the success of “Carmen & Paquita”, we are pleased to announce our next production consisting of three shows of two different programs co-produced by Danceworks Production Malaysia, together with Japan’s Ena Ballet Studio Company based in Nara City.

The full length classical ballet “Don Quixote” will be performed on 14/1/11 (Friday night) and 16/1/11 (Sunday matinee) while the “International Ballet Gala” will be on the 15/1/11 (Saturday night) at Istana Budaya. These two programs will showcase 25 international dancers (including international award winners) from the US, Australia, Japan, Thailand and Germany as well as more than 30 Malaysians.

This will be a feast for the eyes and nourishment        for the soul, and on a professional level, it will give Malaysian dancers the opportunity to perform with and learn from their international counterparts. But even more significant is that we have increased the number of beneficiaries for the 2011 production including HOSPIS Malaysia, Kiwanis Down Syndrome, Lions’ Lyfeline Leukemia Fund, Living Hope Malaysia, Persatuan Diabetes Malaysia, National Kidney Foundation, SPCA, Yayasan Sin Chew, Montfort Boys Town and a few more yet to be confirmed.

INTERNATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES

2011 International Young Choreographer Project.

Young Malaysian choreographers -- put your works on stage in Taiwan!

Eight young Asian choreographers will be chosen by World Dance Alliance Asia Pacific to take part in this project in Kaohsiung, Taiwan. The tentative dates for the 2011 event are from July 3–24, with 2 performances taking place in the theatre of Tsoying High School from July 23 and 24.

The selected choreographers are required to create a new dance on a group of Taiwanese dancers selected by audition in Taiwan. The project takes place over three weeks, culminating with two nights of performance.

The housing, local transportation, dancers, studios, publicity, production and office assistance are offered and a total of NT$30,000 (about US$800) for the honorarium will be provided. Airfare is not covered.
